Charities
Below is the list of the 10 charities that are registered for the 2011 event!
DeVry University Kansas City Chapter of The Gamma Beta Phi Society
Needs: Our website is in major need of an overhaul. It was created almost a year ago by a team of students as part of their senior project. However, it was coded in Zoomla, which apparently doesn't play well with PHP leaving it virtually unfunctionable. We do great things in the community, however, we have difficulty getting that information out to the community and the members without the use of even a calendar or forum on our website.
Mission Statement: To recognize and encourage individual excellence in education, promote the development of leadership ability and character in its members, and to foster, disseminate and improve education through appropriate service projects in the community.

The Doug Doty Vertical Flight Foundation
[http://www.verticalflight.org/]
Needs: Help with taking our website to the next level for effective communication to the general community, helicopter pilots as well as the helicopter industry as a whole. Specifically, revamping the site so that it is easy and intuitive to make the needed changed. I also really need to set up an online application for our scholarships that the applicant can log into the site, download information (PDF), application payment, as well as having the ability to share the applicant information with the scholarship board via online. I would also like to have more graphics and make the site a little more 'helicopter' than it is right now...in a very new way from other aviation sites. I also need to be able to add a blog to this so that I can communicate with people on a more personal level. I'd really like to have a very unique site that is not from a template...
Mission Statement: The Doug Doty Vertical Flight Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) (pending) organization. It was started in August of 2010 by Jesika Doty after the death of her husband Doug, a flight instructor, in a helicopter training accident. The foundation is dedicated to helping helicopter pilots pursue their dream of flying, keeping Doug's dream alive through them.
Northland Childhood Hunger Initiative
[http://feednorthlandkids.org/]
Needs: Our current thoughts are as follows: We have recently put up a website (www.feednorthlandkids.org), but it's pretty basic and could use some additional bells and whistles, as well as some hardening.
- Our own “donation” page, rather than “stealing” one that another site hosts for us
- Our own “gift” contribution page, so people can leave a note regarding financial gifts honoring someone. This could be a part of the "donation" page
- A way to "cycle" pictures on the main page so that people see different pictures either each time they hit the page, or as they’re viewing that page
- Perhaps a more robust Facebook page? Some custom HTML/FBML coding for that site? We would also be open to other options as well - perhaps some of the Code Geeks have worked with these types of sitautions before.
Mission Statement: The Northland Childhood Hunger Initiative Fund evolved out of the Northland Childhood Hunger Fund adopted by the Northland Community Foundation in 2009 to combat childhood hunger in Clay and Platte Counties. We exist because there are 3,400 children in the Northland who are deemed “food insecure,” meaning financial pressures in the home result in lack of nutritional food availability. While school programs assist before and during school, weekends are the challenge. We have partnered with Harvesters Community Food Network through their existing BackSnack Program to address this need. Harvesters’ BackSnack program addresses weekend hunger by providing healthy, kid-friendly foods for children. Harvesters provides the food and volunteers pack food kits weekly at Harvesters. A community partnering organization picks up the empty backpacks from the school, cleans them out and packs them with food kits. School staff distributes them on Friday to the kids who bring them back on Monday to start the whole process again. When we began this initiative, Harvesters was providing backpacks to approximately 1,000 children in the Northland. Through the support of a number of donors, we have secured funding to expand this program to 1,700 children in the Northland in 2010.

Linwood United Church
[http://www.linwoodunited.org/]
Needs: We'd like to have our current website put into an updated, nicer looking and more user friendly version. Most of the information is current and in language that we like. I'd also like to link us to the MORE2 website, add a mapquest map or whatever in the directions spot, get us set up on FaceBook, get put on search engines, and such. I would like however it winds up to be user-friendly for when I need to update info or add events. I'd also like to add a page where folks can listen to the previous week's message by clicking on a certain spot in our bulletin which I need to figure out how to get onto the website. Something we currently don't have.
